Guide
How many boxes fit in a 15-foot moving truck?
There is no honest single number. Furniture, packing efficiency, and box weight change the answer more than raw cubic feet.
Short answer
Do not divide 764 cu ft (U-Haul 15′, checked 2026-09-20) by box volume and call it capacity. After furniture and aisle space, a working planning range is often on the order of tens to low hundreds of mixed boxes—not 250+ medium boxes. Weight can stop you earlier: the same truck lists 6,385 lb payload, and book/tool density fills that faster than clothing boxes.
Specifications
| Truck | Volume | Payload | Interior (L×W×H) | Rear door | Typical use | Reviewed |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| U-Haul 15' Truck Official specs | 764 cu ft | 6,385 lb | 15'0" × 7'8" × 7'2" | 7'3" × 6'5" | 1–2 bedrooms | 2026-09-20 |
| Budget 16' Truck Official specs | 658 cu ft | 4,460 lb | 16'0" × 6'3" × 6'7" | 7'4" × 6'1" | 3–4 rooms / 1 bedroom | 2026-09-20 |
| U-Haul 20' Truck Official specs | 1,016 cu ft | 5,700 lb | 19'5" × 7'8" × 7'1" | 7'3" × 6'5" | 2–3 bedrooms | 2026-09-20 |
Why simple division fails
U-Haul medium boxes plan at 3 cu ft each in our catalog. 764 ÷ 3 ≈ 254—an upper fantasy that ignores sofas, mattresses, wheel wells, ramps, and walk space.
Real loads leave voids. Treat any “max boxes” marketing number as a ceiling you will not hit once furniture is aboard.
Two planning sketches (ranges, not promises)
Boxes-only sketch: if you somehow filled ~60% of 764 cu ft with medium boxes after access space, you are near ~150 medium boxes before weight—still an optimistic packing story, not a guarantee.
Furniture + boxes sketch: a furnished 1–2BR starter often spends hundreds of cu ft on furniture first. Remaining box capacity may be dozens of mixed small/medium/large boxes, not a truck-full of cartons.
Density changes payload before the floor fills
Small/medium/large boxes in our catalog use content-density assumptions; book boxes plan around 30–50 lb each with a 65 lb rating note. A van-load of books can approach payload while looking “half empty.”
Use Light / Normal / Books & tools style density choices in the calculator when your closets are not clothing-only.
Cross-brand 15/16 class note
Budget 16′ lists 658 cu ft—less volume than U-Haul 15′—so “15-foot” is not a universal box budget. Compare the exact truck you will rent.
A Budget 16′ also lists 4,460 lb payload versus U-Haul 15′ at 6,385 lb. Box-heavy or book-heavy moves can look volume-comfortable on either truck while weight diverges by nearly a ton of published headroom.
Second example — studio boxes vs 2BR mix
Studio / boxes-forward sketch: mostly medium boxes, a bed, and a desk. After furniture and a walk aisle, planning might land near ~80–120 mixed boxes on a U-Haul 15′ before the load feels packed—still well under a naive 764÷3 fantasy, and still subject to the 6,385 lb payload if many cartons are books.
Furnished 2BR sketch: sofa, beds, dressers, and kitchen goods consume a large share of 764 cu ft first. Remaining box capacity often looks like ~40–80 mixed cartons, not a wall-to-wall carton fill. Jumping to U-Haul’s 20′ (1,016 cu ft / 5,700 lb) adds floor space but cuts payload—poor trade if the overflow is book boxes.
Decision checklist
Count small, medium, and large boxes separately; note which are books or tools. Enter furniture with real dimensions so door fit and volume share the same model.
Compare U-Haul 15′ (764 cu ft / 6,385 lb) to Budget 16′ (658 cu ft / 4,460 lb) if both are available—do not assume the longer label wins. If you need more volume than 764 cu ft, check whether U-Haul 20′ (1,016 cu ft / 5,700 lb) or a second trip preserves weight better.
Ignore “max boxes” claims that divide cargo volume by carton size. Those numbers erase furniture, voids, and payload.
Booking-day packing steps
Load furniture and leave vertical “walls” for boxes rather than scattering cartons first. Keep dense book boxes low and countable—if you are unsure of total pounds, leave a visible empty bay instead of filling every gap with paperbacks.
If the box still has open floor after the inventory is aboard, that is normal. Stop packing when the list is done; empty floor is not wasted money when it is the margin under payload.

What could change this
- All box counts here are planning ranges with stated assumptions—not load certificates.
- Packing skill and furniture mix dominate; two households with the same bedroom count diverge widely.
- This is not a dedicated boxes calculator; use the inventory tool for your list.
